Woodley White Classical Guitar
So, Woodley lives in Hawaii, after living in Portland Oregon for so many years. Lucky boy! I read some of his stuff and it seems clear he’s a spiritual guy, who loves the earth, and the wood. When it comes to music and a classical guitar that make music, this is always a good thing, and it seems clear that WW takes his profession seriously. I mean seriously.
This guitar is gorgeous. The rosette is one of a kind beautiful. Take a close look at the photos and you will see some of the most original and gorgeous work in this beauty.
The Spruce is so tight as to seem to not have grain. I read that he goes to the Italian Alps to get his wood from the same source as the violin and cello makers of Cremona. Clearly, he understands that the woods are of the utmost importance. After speaking with him numerous times, it is clear that he understands the wood, the construct, the voice, and the player.
In this guitar, WW doesn’t disappoint. Everything, including the Indian Rosewood is incredibly straight, nice and ruddy looking, with the entire guitar tapping beautifully. This is a no-brainer as far as I’m concerned. It has a resonance that belies the fact that it is a guitar. It reminds me of a bowed instrument when I hear it, with a very clear separation of voice, even balance across her spectrum and bells in the top. I love the basses and the melding of the total voices.
There is special hand work by Woodley on the butt of the guitar (see photo below), using Amboyna Burl as does the Rosette, which is beautiful. The headplate is made of Madagascar Rosewood.
Additionally, she is in very good condition. She was well cared for, where I can find nothing major to report. Yes, she has tiny nail marks in and around the rosette, and incidental dings on the soundboard and back, but this is all normal, nothing structural. You have to look closely to find them. They won’t show in the photos.
Recording her, I’ll be honest….I pushed this guitar hard, playing very aggressively with fast attack on the right hand. You can hear it in the recording of The Morning Song below. Fast, wild, pushing as hard as I wanted. The guitar handled it no problem, with probably more to give. Woodley is such a great builder, instinctively knowing the player’s needs and desires, this guitar being proof of his extraordinary talent.
